Everybody’s Reading Festival: Winged Birds at Leicester Cathedral

Birds 1

dsc_0440

On Saturday we provided an art activity at Leicester Cathedral on behalf of the Everybody’s Reading Festival – Winged Birds.
Winged Birds…
A creative writing idea that combines art, imagination and storytelling!
All participants started with a bird template which they were invited to decorate. Materials on offer consisted of paper, tissue paper, buttons, sequins, feathers etc. Whilst decorating their birds the participants were encouraged to imagine the stories the bird(s) might tell. For example, what is their name? Where are they going? Where have they been? What do they eat?
These stories were captured on another piece of paper through imagery and/ or text.
Once the stories were completed the participants were asked to fold the piece of paper into a concertina shape. They then threaded the paper through the bird template/ body to become the birds wings.
The wings were then secured in place with a pin and a piece of thread to enable the birds to take flight.
All the birds created could be positioned/ displayed in a storytelling tree or taken home to carry on their journey.
